Featuring highlights from NPR’s TINY DESK CONCERTS series – Innovative artists performing intimate “unplugged” sets in the NPR headquarters offices. These performances can be tentative or explosive – but always joyful. Memorable performances from artists like Alana Springsteen, Beirut, Josh Ritter, Alabama Shakes, St Paul and the Broken Bones, First Aid Kit and many more. This London area studio specializes in LIVE in-studio recordings. We’ve just discovered their catalogue, and it’s an electrifying mix of dynamic funk and British blue eyed soul extraordinaire. Anchored by Redtenbacher’s Funkestra as the house band (think Booker T and the MGs as the foundation of the Stax Records sound in the ‘60s). Joni Mitchell is a musical treasure who has inspired several generations of our favorite singer songwriters. Her Laurel Canyon home nurtured what we now call the Laurel Canyon Sound, including that of Crosby Stills, Nash & Young (who she is credited with introducing – and “Woodstock” was of course her composition). But nothing measures up to her own artistry, which you will (re)discover tonight through her recordings and homage paid by Diana Krall, Redtenbacher’s Funkestra, Herbie Hancock, Tierney Sutton, Jessica Molasky, Ian Shaw, Tina Turner, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Shawn Colvin, David Crosby/CSNY and more.
